If you are looking to volunteer we could really use fresh faces and ideas. Please contact Heather Lavelle Tropica1a@aol.com for more information.
Lydia Miyashita
Earlier this year Friends of Adoptive Families shared with you the story of Lydia Miyashita. Lydia, age 5 was adopted from the Qingyuan Qingcheng District Welfare Institute through Family Adoption Consultants China program. On August 15, 2008 she was diagnosed with AML (acute myeloid leukemia). This amazing story made headlines here and in China, where a search by an Akron Children’s Hospital doctor led to the unlikely discovery of her birth family.
The hope was to use chemotherapy to put her cancer into remission and then cure her with a bone-marrow transplant, donated by her birth sister in China or a cord blood bank in Taiwan. But even modern medicine, a doctor’s dedication and Lydia’s spunky spirit weren’t enough to beat the deadly disease. Lydia Li-mei Eiko Miyashita, 5, died Tuesday February 24, 2009 in the arms of her parents, Monica and Mark Miyashita.
Friends of Adoptive Families sends its thoughts and prayers to the Miyashita Family during this difficult time.
